Effective Tuesday, Oct. 1, State Board of Education Member Stephen Varela has resigned from his position and intends to accept another one to benefit students. Varela was appointed to represent the 3rd Congressional District in January 2023.

Voters in November will decide five of the 10 seats on the Kansas Board of Education. The results could shift the political and ideological balance on the board, which could affect what Kansas students learn in classrooms.

Varela, who represented Colorado’s Third Congressional District on the board, resigned Tuesday. A GOP committee will pick his replacement, who will serve until January.

Stephen Varela, a Republican, represents District 3 in western and southern Colorado. His seat is one of four up for election in November.

An Omaha member of the Nebraska State Board of Education has submitted her resignation, with the full board set to vote Friday on whether to accept that decision. Board member Jacquelyn Morrison of Omaha submitted her resignation Sept.
