President Donald Trump signed a memo late Saturday night federalizing 2,000 California National Guard troops to address what a White House official called the “lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” in Los Angeles.

President Trump’s assertions that federal troops have saved the city from destruction did not appear to reflect reality.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has argued that the deployment is “an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act.”

"Neither the National Guard nor the Marines are engaged in law enforcement," the DOJ's motion reads. "Rather, they are protecting law enforcement."

According to experts, Trump is the first President to deploy the National Guard without a request from the state Governor since 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent federal troops to Alabama to protect those partaking in a civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, led by Martin Luther King Jr.
