Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill Wednesday creating an office inspired by the Department of Government Efficiency and aimed at reducing state regulations, joining other Republican governors who have pledged their own versions of billionaire Elon Musk's cost-cutting group.

The Office of the Governor Greg Abbott said it differs from its federal counterpart in that it will be a permanent part of the state government. The legislation was a part of Senate Bill 14, and prioritizes keeping more money in the pockets of Texas taxpayers, according to Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.

The first bill to reach Abbott’s desk this session creates a regulation-cutting state agency under the purview of the governor. It was passed with bipartisan supermajorities.
