The public wasn’t notified about a 911 outage until about three hours after problems began because the Honolulu Police Department was struggling to come up with an alternate means of communication, officials said Monday. Police are investigating what caused the 911 outage and failure of the regular backup system.

The Honolulu Police Department is explaining what happened when the city experienced a 911 service outage. If you were on Oahu, you likely got several alerts on your phone. A series of alerts went out through emergency mobile alerts and broadcasts at about 2 p.

Honolulu’s 911 system is currently down for customers using certain providers, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. In an emergency, use a landline to call 911.
