Trump’s push to end the fighting, his hostility toward Ukraine, and his affinity for Putin have dramatically altered the landscape

President Donald Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Feb. 12 marked the beginning of the end of the three-year war in Ukraine. It also opened a new phase in America’s trans-Atlantic relations.

Echoing Putin’s talking points, the war against Ukraine no longer is an unjustified aggression but was, as Trump has now declared, Kyiv’s fault. Ukraine has become the ultimate test that the liberal international order failed to pass.
