Some Social Security recipients may soon notice a change in their payments. That’s because the administration will withhold up to 50% of monthly payments for those who received overpayments in previous years.

Regular payments will continue on their standard schedule throughout July 2025. However, recipients who received overpayment notices beginning April 25, 2025, may see their payments reduced starting approximately July 24, 2025. The SSA provides a 90-day notice period between issuing overpayment notifications and beginning benefit withholding.

The Social Security Administration is clawing back more in overpayments than it has in the past thanks to a new rule. Up to two million Americans could see their Social Security payments reduced by 50% in late July.
