State officials were notified Friday morning of a newborn humpback whale calf that was found dead on a beach in Kihei. Federal officials worked with a Native Hawaiian practitioner as well as with state and county officials to carefully bring the calf to its final resting place far offshore,

Federal and state officials are recovering the carcass of a humpback whale calf from the shores of Kihei, Maui.

A deceased humpback whale was found in Kihei the morning of Jan. 3, prompting a response from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service.
