No, Marathon is not a free-to-play game. According to a tweet from the official Marathon account, the game is a premium title, but it will also not have a "full-price." There is little further information as to what this means beyond that we will learn more details on the pricing this summer.
Bungie's Marathon Releases In September On Same Day As Another Big Game
Bungie's new shooter Marathon was the focus of a livestream event today in which the company shared lots of new information about it, including a release date. Marathon will launch on September 23, which is the same day that Gearbox's highly anticipated Borderlands 4 arrives. It's expected that GTA 6 will follow soon after, potentially in October.
You can try Bungie's new extraction game with the Marathon alpha very soon, but in the meantime the original FPS trilogy is free on Steam.
