An E. coli outbreak linked to recalled carrots has led to dozens of illnesses in 18 states and one death, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Whole and baby carrots, many sold under the store brands of the nation’s largest grocery sellers, have been recalled because they might be involved in an E. coli outbreak that already has killed one person.

A California grower has issued a nationwide recall of organic carrots it produced for some of the country's leading supermarkets over an E. coli outbreak.

Grimmway Farms announced a recall on select baby and whole carrots on Nov. 16 due to a possible E. coli contamination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday that cases emerged between Sept. 6 and Oct. 28 across 18 states, with Washington, Minnesota and New York reporting the highest number of cases.

The outbreak, detected across 18 U.S. states, is linked to carrots and baby carrots sold by brands such as Wegmans, 365, Trader Joe’s and Nature’s Promise.

More than a dozen brands are recalling bags of baby and whole organic carrots that were sold in 19 states for risk of E. coli contamination.
