Google Maps said it would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America once it is officially updated in the U.S. Geographic Names System.

Sheinbaum made the case that Google should not bend to “the mandate of a country” attempting to change the name of an international sea. “For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico,” she said.

Google on Monday said its maps will use names for Denali and the Gulf of Mexico favored by President Donald Trump — Mount McKinley and Gulf of America — when federal maps make the switch.
