U.S. stocks finished modestly lower on Tuesday in a quiet trading day as investors digested first-quarter earnings from some large financial institutions in the absence of major trade-policy updates.

Stocks showed weakness Tuesday with the major indexes closing lower. But a recent IPO name climbed for a third straight day.

U.S. stocks were giving back most of their morning gains in early-afternoon trading on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was wavering between gains and losses, at around 40,522 as of 1 p.m.
