VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis is being laid to rest Saturday in a ceremony reflecting his priorities as pope and wishes as pastor: Presidents and princes will attend his funeral in St. Peter’s Square, but prisoners and migrants will usher him into the basilica where he will be buried.

Outside St. Peter’s Basilica, thousands of people lined up for hours, some waiting in the cold twilight of Thursday morning to catch a glimpse of the pontiff’s body as it lay in a simple wooden coffin, dressed in red liturgical vestments, his hands folded and holding a rosary.

The public mourning period presents a major security challenge: how to accommodate all the people who want to see the pope - and at the same time - keep them safe.
