The only realistic name on that list, according to actual goal-scoring statistics, is Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews. Matthews, however, was quick to calm down fans excited about the possibility when discussing it on Monday.

Matthews has 398 goals in 623 career games, 497 shy of Ovechkin’s mark. At his current goals-per-game pace, he would need 778 more games to reach 896 goals, one more than Ovechkin’s record. Based on an 82-game season, that translates to about nine-and-a-half more seasons.

To break the goals record, Matthews has to find the back of the net over 500 more times. Ovechkin scored the final 505 goals, including the record-breaker, in 865 games, or 10.5 seasons. Matthews can achieve that, however, he would need health on his side and play into his late thirties.
