WHITESBURG, Ky. (WKYT/LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER) - A Kentucky sheriff accused of killing a judge is leaving his office.

The letter, from The Law Office of Jeremy A. Bartley, said that Stines made the “difficult decision to effect his retirement” on Monday ahead of the ongoing legal process.

Shawn “Mickey” Stines allegedly fatally shot Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins in a courthouse on September 19 and has been charged with first-degree murder.
