A deadline to begin talks on extending Gaza’s ceasefire arrived Monday with the Israeli prime minister in Washington, silence from his office about when a negotiating team might engage with Hamas, and considerable uncertainty about what the next stage of the fragile truce will look like.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu are set to meet Tuesday as the Israeli prime minister faces competing pressure from his right-wing coalition to end a temporary truce against Hamas militants in Gaza and from war-weary Israelis who want the remaining hostages home and the 15-month conflict to end.

The meeting is expected to focus on negotiating the second phase of the three-phase ceasefire deal with Hamas, they will also discuss Iran’s nuclear efforts, arms shipments and a potential deal to normalize relations with Saudi Arabia.
