When R.J. Umberger played for the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2008-14, the NHL was starting to hold outdoor games regularly. The venues included icons: Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Michigan Stadium, Dodger Stadium, Yankee Stadium and Soldier Field.

The Columbus Blue Jackets will play the Detroit Red Wings at Ohio Stadium on March 1, marking the first outdoor hockey game in the stadium's history. Twenty One Pilots will perform during the first intermission, while the Ohio State University Athletic Band will entertain during the second intermission.

The NHL released its renderings of the rink and field designs at Ohio Stadium for the 2025 NHL Stadium Series game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Detroit Red Wings.
