Alonso remains the top power hitter available, but as a first baseman with little value outside of his bat, his market has not developed as he hoped. Most recently, the four-time All-Star’s camp extended an exclusive offer to the Mets, believed to be for three years with a high average annual value.

Pete Alonso’s market continues to shrink and now, the New York Mets appear as though they are moving on from their former franchise slugger. The 30-year-old first baseman and his agent, Scott Boras, have misplayed the market.

The Mets seem ready to move on from Pete Alonso, but at this stage in the offseason, options have dwindled to find a viable replacement.

However, negotiations with first baseman Pete Alonso remain at an impasse. On Wednesday night, Dan Martin and Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported that time is running out in negotiations between the Mets and Alonso. Here’s an excerpt from the story, via The Post:

The addition of Santander, who hit 44 home runs with the Baltimore Orioles last season, follows the deep-pocketed Jays’ failed pursuits of Shohei Ohtani last offseason and of Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and Roki Sasaki this winter.

The New York Mets still need to figure out their first base situation, and the Baltimore Orioles have a logjam there. A deal could be a win-win for both teams.

Pete Alonso remains unsigned and as spring training approaches, he may end up signing a less lucrative deal and try his luck in free agency again next. If that is the case, a surprise American League team could land him.
