The FOX Forecast Center is closely monitoring the development of the nation’s next significant storm system, which could produce feet of snow across portions of the Southwest and Plains, while severe weather could rock parts of the Southeast and Gulf Coast that were recently slammed by a historic blizzard.

Right now, the Aloha State is facing relatively rare severe weather along with some snow. It may strike you as odd, but, Hawaii rarely experiences hurricanes, severe weather or even thunderstorms. It all has to do with the island chain’s latitude and location in the Pacific Ocean.

Due to ongoing severe weather across Hawaii, numerous schools, businesses, events, and parks have closed for the day. Residents are advised to stay updated on local news and official announcements

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - All Hawaii State Department of Education schools in Maui County will remain closed Friday. The state closed schools early Thursday on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai under advisement from the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) due to severe weather conditions.

Severe weather is affecting the Hawaiian islands as power outages close schools and flooding and ponding is creating hazards for facilities. KIUC crews have been responding to weather related outages since late Wednesday evening.
