Substitution of root beer concentrate for extract
The recipe calls for root beer extract, but I haven't found any locally, and the cost plus shipping on Amazon is a little more than I'd like. I've tried googling this, but haven't come up with a definitive answer: can I substitute root beer concentrate (easily bought locally)?

Can sarsaparilla and sassafras be substituted with licorice root?
I found root beer recipes that used licorice root as an ingredient, and I was able to order some online. However, right from opening the package, it did not smell in any way like licorice or anything remotely evocative of root beer. I tried to boil it as instructed in the recipe, but the aroma did not improve.

Especially if black beer is exceptionally malty and sweet, Malta would be a good non-alcoholic substitute. If your recipe has some sweet aspect elsewhere you might cut back on that if Malta is too sweet.
